Three important Kilkenny road projects are set to go ahead with the announcement this morning (Wednesday) of more than €1.2million in funding from the National Transport Authority (NTA).
Two of the projects are in Kilkenny City with the third in Callan town centre.
Walking and cycling infrastructure is set to be improved under the Active Travel Programme funding.
In Kilkenny City the pedestrian and cycle bridge linking Cootes Lane to the Ring Road, Active Travel Connections, has been allocated €560,000.
Also in the city, €400,000 has been allocated for a 'rapid build' along the Freshford and Granges Road.
A project that had to be paused in Callan, last year, has now been granted funding of €300,000. This will see the provision of wider active travel facilities and the one way system along Bridge Street.
The Active Travel Investment Programme for 2024 will fund approximately 800 new and existing Active Travel projects.
Hugh Creegan, Deputy CEO of the National Transport Authority said: “2024 will be a milestone year for active travel in Ireland. Over the course of this year, total investment by the NTA in walking and cycling infrastructure since 2020 will break the €1bn barrier.
