Tender documents for a major infrastructure project on the Kilkenny border are to be published in January.
Ferry Mountgarret Bridge, which connects South Kilkenny with county Wexford, outside New Ross, closed for survey works last summer. Now plans are being drawn up for necessary upgrade works.
At the recent meeting of Callan Thomastown municipal district councillors, Area Engineer, Declan Murphy, said it is hoped that a contractor will be appointed in the first quarter of next year.
Mr Murphy said the survey work revealed that ‘for a bridge of that age’ it is in very good condition. The bridge is almost 100 years old. However, work is needed on the structure, including steel work, painting, and work on the cement parapets.
