WATCH: Gardaí give retiring service dog Laser emotional guard of honour

Gardaí have given retiring service dog Laser a guards of honour in an emotional video shared on social media.

Laser was retired from the force last month but gardaí took to Twitter to share a lovely video of him receiving a guard of honour and round of applause from gardaí recently.

The video also showed him then playing with other dogs after his well-earned retirement. The post was accompanied by the caption: "Guímid scor sona fada ort ó dhualgas, Laser," which means, "We wish you a long and happy retirement from duty, Laser."

Laser served as a detection dog for ten years in Cork and was retired from service last month to live with his handler and "best friend", Garda Pat Harrington.

Joining the Garda Dog Unit as a mere pup of 5 months old, Laser was trained by Garda Harrington as a general purpose dog, and was deployed on detections after 18 months.

Some of the major successes he has sniffed out over his decade-long career include a €900,000 grow house, along with locating several burglars and recovering plenty of stolen goods.

Laser’s reward after each day's hard work was "time to play with his favourite ball, some Rodeo dog treats and a Dentastix", according to a statement by gardaí on social media on October 18.

"After a decade long career serving the people of Ireland, Laser hangs up his Garda harness this week and will retire in bliss at home," the statement read.

"There will be lots more much deserved lie-in’s and playtime as he enjoys his 80’s after a long and distinguished police career. Thank you for your service, Laser."
