The late Billy Murphy
Tributes have been pouring in for the late Billy Murphy who sadly passed away unexpectedly last Thursday (January 25).
Mr Murphy was a well-known musician and broadcaster locally and his passing has left much of the Kilkenny community in mourning.
Following his death, many of his neighbours in the St Patrick's Parish area of the city as well as former friends and colleagues have paid tribute to the much-loved local figure by sharing their tributes and memories.
Former Parish Priest, Fr Roderick Whearty, said: "So sorry to hear of Billy's death. A lovely man and faithful parishioner. He will be missed by so many people. May you now sing with the angels Billy. RIP."
The local post-office in Loughboy also paid tribute, stating: "Our deepest sympathy to all the Murphy family at this sad time. We will miss his laughter and songs. Rest in peace Billy."
The Ardnore/Noremount Residents Association, shared their condolences by saying: "Deepest Sympathy to Jill, Liz, Jane and the extended Murphy family at this very sad time. Billy will be greatly missed by us all. May God rest his soul and comfort all his family."
The local man was also a cherished member of the music community in Kilkenny.
Fellow musician and friend, Ollie Kearney, said: "Sincere sympathies to Jill & family on the passing of Billy. Many a good time we had over the years."
Well-known performer, Eugene Dewberry, added: "Rest in peace old friend the ultimate entertainer may heaven be your bed Billy."
Meanwhile, former radio colleagues of Mr Murphy have shared their sadness at his passing, recalling cherished memories of his popular 'Hospital Requests' programme on KCR.
Broadcaster, Ber Scott, commented: "RIP Billy, condolences to Jill and all the family, thinking of you at this sad time."
"His passing has marked the end of an era in Kilkenny. He was a truly wonderful human being who could light up anyone's day, full of wit Billy always had a friendly smile. He will always be remembered for his "Hospitals Requests" programme on KCR all those years ago. We will never see his likes again," former KCR presenter, Ray Cleere, added.
Local soccer club, Evergreen, paid tribute to their 'ardent supporter & friend' with a statement that read: "We extend our deepest and heartfelt sympathies to Jill, Liz, Jane and the Murphy family on the loss of their beloved Billy. We were truly blessed to count him as an ardent supporter & friend. Billy's unique personality enriched so many strands of Kilkenny's music, sport and working life. He will be greatly missed by all those lucky enough to have called him a friend. Heaven's gain is our Loss. May He Rest In Peace."
Arrangements: Mr Murphy will repose in Johnston's Funeral Home (R95XE00) today (Monday, January 29) from 4pm with Funeral Prayers at 6.30pm followed by removal to St Patrick's Church. Flowers are welcome but a donation, in lieu, can be made to The St. Vincent de Paul Society, a charity close to Billy's heart.
