RIP: Kilkenny GAA club pay tribute to 'giant' of the club after sad passing

The death has occurred of Richard (Richie) Tierney, Mill Road, Inistioge, Kilkenny.

Mr Tierney was a greatly respected figure in the Rower Inistioge GAA Club, serving in a number of roles on and off the field, including as club chairman from 2019 to 2024.

His native club posted a heartfelt tribute following the sad news of his passing: "Richie was a giant within the Rower Inistioge GAA Club.

"His commitment to the club and its members was unwavering, and his legacy will forever be etched in the history of the Rower Inistioge GAA," they added.

"Richie’s influence on the club was felt at every level. He dedicated countless hours to coaching and training teams, from the youngest players right up to our intermediate team. His passion for the game and the club was remarkable.

"Richie also served the club in many roles off the field, where his leadership and vision were invaluable," the club stated.

"Richie’s ability to bring people together for a common cause made him a driving force behind so many of the club’s successes.

"Richie was a generous benefactor of the Rower Inistioge GAA Club. His support, both in time and in resources, made a lasting difference to the development and growth of the club. The Tierney family have been and always will be an integral part of our club’s fabric, and Richie’s contribution will be remembered as one of the cornerstones of our community," the South Kilkenny club continued.

"We offer our deepest sympathy to Richie’s wife Josette, his children Michelle, Richard, Pat, and Geraldine, his brother Mickey, and his sister Catherine. Our thoughts are with you all at this incredibly difficult time.

"Richie’s passing leaves a void in the heart of the Rower Inistioge GAA Club that will never be filled. His legacy, however, will live on in the countless players, volunteers, and members he influenced over the years. Rest in peace, Richie. You will never be forgotten." the Rower Inistioge concluded.
