The late Mary O’Shea

Tributes have been paid to a popular South Kilkenny writer and historian who died on Saturday.

Mary O’Shea, Raheen, Piltown, was a local farmer.

It’s believed she was cutting a tree at her farm on Saturday afternoon when a branch fell and killed her.

Ms O’ Shea was a well-known and highly respected historian and member of the Kilkenny Historical Society.

In 2014, she published a major, 480-page history of her local parish which comprises the districts of Templeorum, Owning, Piltown and Fiddown.

Local councillor Pat Dunphy paid tribute to her this week, saying she was a very popular lady, and the community was shocked at her death.

Mary O’ Shea’s funeral takes place at Templeorum Church tomorrow, November 24, for funeral mass at 11am followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.
