Kilkenny suffer Towns Cup heartbreak

Kilkenny’s Towns Cup hopes were ended when Wicklow’s Brian Johnston landed a knockout blow at Foulkstown.

This was a tremendously exciting tit-for-tat contest in which Kilkenny landed the first shot from Jack Campion’s penalty. The feeling-out process continued, Wicklow’s forwards grinding out a penalty for full-back Johnston to make it all square Then, the first serious incursion saw Joe Manuel make his way to the corner for Campion to launch a touchline conversion for 10-3 in the 20th minute.

It was Wicklow’s turn to demonstrate their power with a pushover try that had number-eight Brian Short’s name all over it. Johnston converted for 10-all.

Kilkenny showed there was finesse to their strategy with right-wing Geoff Power finishing off a fine move. Campion converted for 17-10 at the interval.

On the evidence of the first-half, this would go to the wire. It would all come down to which would make the most of its opportunities. A flash of brilliance by Ruan Watts to cut Kilkenny open was all Johnston needed to tie the game with his conversion on the hour. There was nothing between the sides. Every passing minute brought greater tension.

A score, any score, would win the day. To this end, Johnston threw a dummy and sped to the posts for the winning score which he also converted.
