A Kilkenny school choir has been named the Best School Choir in Ireland in a prestigious, national competition.

No strangers to success, the joint Loreto and CBS Choir has again come out on top, this time in the Lyric FM Choirs for Christmas competition. The win was announced on Christmas Eve.

Choirs from all over Ireland took part this year and their performances were broadcast on Lyric FM throughout December, and all the entries are available to listen to on the Lyric FM webpage.

The prize for winning the competition is €200.

Earlier this month, the combined Loreto Secondary School and CBS choir also scooped gold at the Bratislava International Advent Festival.

The competition saw choirs from all over the world taking part, but the Kilkenny group  were the only Irish entry. To win gold means they scored above 90, which was a fantastic achievement.

Conductors of the choir were Lorraine Maher from Loreto and Mandy Dowling from CBS. The piano accompanist was Mary Butler.
Ms Maher said “the students have done themselves, their school, families and community very proud.”
Musical collaborations between Loreto and CBS students go back to the early 1990s.
