The Kilkenny store has been open for business since 1994

Students from CBC Kilkenny paid an emotional visit to Khan’s Bookshop on James’ Street earlier this week to say a ‘personal thank you’ to staff of the iconic bookstore.

The local bookshop, run by Khan Kiely, confirmed to customers it will close doors for the final time later this year.

It has been open for business since 1994, and began trading in a small premises in James’ Street.

The shop moved four times over the coming years until settling back into a larger space in James’ Street, in 2000.

The shop is now holding a huge closing down sale and a date for final closure has not been announced.

“Our students and staff called into Khans Books on James Street this week to say a personal thank you to Khan and Valerie as the shop prepares to close its doors,” CBC Kilkenny posted to social media.

“We wanted to show our appreciation in person for the many ways Khans has supported CBC students, staff and families over the years. The students presented flowers and best wishes on behalf of the school community.

“For many of our students, Khans is more than just a bookshop. Some have memories of buying their first novel there, choosing a prize book or visiting with their parents to get their school books. We invited the boys to share some of these memories and it was lovely to hear the personal connections they have with the shop,” the post continued.

“After 32 years as part of the Kilkenny and CBC community, Khans has left a lasting mark on generations of our students, staff and families, and we are grateful for the memories, kindness and support over the years.”
