Kilkenny community springs into action for annual clean-up

A television, car seats, a kitchen unit and an oil tank were among the items collected by an eager team of Kilkenny litter pickers at the weekend.

More than 40 people lent their support to the Kilmacow annual spring clean, with almost 50 bags of rubbish.

The group also picked up other discarded items such as scooters and chairs.

The Spring Clean Working Group of David Williams, Edward Doyle and Tomás Breathnach thanked everyone for the huge effort made over the two days.

They also acknowledged the individuals and groups who collect rubbish on local roads in their own areas over the course of the year - their work was most noticeable this year in terms of the significant reduction in litter collected during the Spring Clean compared to previous years.

Special thanks went to Mallwood for making a lorry available to pick up bags of rubbish collected and to driver Séamus Phelan for his assistance with the clean-up.

Thanks also went to Michael Kinsella, who helped to transport bags from the roadside to the pick-up area, and to Kay Williams for making a pick-up area available for the rubbish until collection by Kilkenny County Council.

The clean-up in Kilmacow began 30 years ago, with a gap of perhaps five years from 2000.

They have continued on an annual basis since 2006 and the continued participation by local people reflects well on the sense of pride there is in Kilmacow as a place to live.

The annual Spring Clean in Kilmacow is supported by Kilkenny County Council and An Taisce.
