Demolition work on the old Graignamanagh fire station building. Picture: Mary Byrne
A small part of old Graignamanagh began to disappear today to make room for future development.
Demolition work began on the old fire station, on High Street, already replaced with a modern facility on the outskirts of the town.
The site will now be used to build much-needed new homes.
Plans for the site are to construct two, one-bed apartments. Each will have a garden and a parking space.
A high proportion of Kilkenny County Council housing list applicants are seeking one or two-bed homes. Announcing the plans for these apartments, in 2019, councillors were told the then housing list had 43 people who expressed a first preference to live in Graignamanagh and 70 further ‘all preferences.’
While the new homes are welcome many residents in the area were nostalgic about the old firestation, the alarms that rang there and being allowed to wear a fireman's hat as a child. The photo below shows what the building looked like on the outside.
The station was in use since the 1960s and was too small to cope with the demands of a modern fire and rescue service. A new fire station was opened four years ago.
