Major structural defects have been identified at Ferrymountgarrett Bridge in south Kilkenny, according to a presentation recently delivered to elected members of Kilkenny County Council.

The bridge, which was constructed in 1930, is a protected structure with a reinforced concrete construction and steel rolling span. Council officials said the structure is suffering from “age and marine related defects and deterioration”.

The presentation stated that there are “significant and widespread defects across the structure” and that the bridge is “actively deteriorating”.

A structural assessment also confirmed that the bridge will require load restrictions in the short term due to reduced capacity.

Council officials warned that introducing load restrictions would result in “significant disruption to local communities and businesses” as well as increased journey times and economic impact due to long diversions.

Images included in the presentation showed damaged concrete, corroded steelwork and a significant crack in a supporting concrete structure.

The council outlined a series of proposed remediation works including extensive concrete repairs and strengthening works, steelwork repairs and repainting, drainage works, resurfacing, lighting upgrades and temporary traffic management measures.

Work to ensure the future of Ferrymountgarret Bridge, in south Kilkenny, is set to take place this summer - to make it safe for the volume of heavy vehicles that now cross the heritage structure.

As part of that work the bridge is set to be completely closed and enclosed, to prevent any pollution of the surrounding countryside and protect local wildlife and residents.

The required road closure for these works is for a period of 10 to 12 weeks from June 24 to August 28. This is a significant period but fully necessary to carry out the works as quickly as possible.

In the case of the Rower area, the Council recognises that the required diversion routes are extensive. Unfortunately, these arrangements are unavoidable due to the nature of the works.
