Kilkenny minor camogs maintain bright start with victory against Tipperary

Ona Kennedy led the way, scoring 1-2 for the Kilkenny minors in their win over Tipperary.

Kilkenny continued their impressive scoring, beating Tipperary by 14 points in the Electric Ireland Minor A All-Ireland Championship second round tie played in Fethard Town Park last Sunday.

After hitting 3-11 against Dublin, they hit 3-14 against Tipperary to maintain a fine start to the defence of their national crown.

On a morning of heavy showers and some sunshine, Ona Kennedy opened the scoring with a pointed free for Kilkenny in the third minute.

Amy O’Shea slotted over another point for Kilkenny after a neat pass from Aoife O’Grady while Shauna Mahony added another point for the visitors before Abbie Horgan opened Tipperary’s account from a pointed free.

In the 13th minute, Kilkenny were awarded a penalty after Holly Ryan was tripped in the square.

Ona Kennedy stood over the ball and she drilled the sliotar to the bottom left corner of the net, with the Tipperary keeper rooted to the spot.

Amy O’Shea tacked on a point for Kilkenny then Emily Phelan got in for Kilkenny’s second goal after a blistering run through the Tipperary defence.

Ona Kennedy slotted over a 45m free for Kilkenny before Amy O’Shea got in for the visitors third goal after a long clearance from their defence and blasted the sliotar to the back of the net which put the winners 13 points clear on the scoreboard.

Abbie Horgan then converted the home side’s second point in the 26th minute from a 30m free.

Heading towards the half-time whistle, Emily Phelan tacked on a lovely point to leave the interval score 3-6 to 0-2 in favour of Kilkenny.

On the resumption of play the sun was shining, Amy O’Shea converted a pointed free for Kilkenny and Grace Stapleton slotted over a point for the home side.

Emily Phelan and Shauna Mahony added a point each for the stripey girls.

Alice Butler and Emily Phelan then traded points before Tipperary hit two points from Abbie Horgan (free) and Grace Cleary with an Amy O’Shea pointed free sandwiched between.

Abbie Horgan converted another pointed free for Tipperary with Kilkenny then hitting three points on the trot through Emily Phelan, Amy O’Shea and Shauna Mahony.

Abbie Horgan closed out the scoring with two pointed frees for the home side to leave the final-score Kilkenny 3-14 Tipperary 0-9.

Kilkenny will now play Limerick away in the 3rd Round on Sunday March, 1.
