Cllr Pat Fitzpatrick
A dedicated road safety officer is needed in Kilkenny, according to a local councillor.
In response to “the alarming increase in road accidents and deaths within our county and community”, Cllr Pat Fitzpatrick raised this issue at the recent Castlecomer Municipal District meeting.
The north Kilkenny councillor was supported by his colleagues in urging Kilkenny County Council to take decisive action by appointing a full-time Road Safety Officer.
“This dedicated individual would collaborate with An Garda Síochana, schools, and engineers to implement comprehensive measures aimed at enhancing road safety,” Cllr Fitzpatrick suggested to officials.
“With the number of road accidents and deaths on the rise, it is imperative that proactive steps be taken to safeguard the lives of all road users. A full-time Road Safety Officer would not only coordinate efforts among key stakeholders but also spearhead initiatives to educate the public on safe driving practices and advocate for infrastructure improvements where necessary.
“By appointing a dedicated person focused solely on road safety, Kilkenny County Council would demonstrate its commitment to prioritising the well-being of all road users.”
