Newly elected TD Peter 'Chap' Cleere with clerk of the Dáil Peter Finnegan
Fianna Fáil TD for Carlow Kilkenny Peter 'Chap' Cleere has welcomed the increase in housing adaptation grants.
Deputy Cleere has welcomed the recent announcement by Minister for Housing, Darragh O’Brien regarding increased housing adaptation grants for older people and people with disabilities.
This initiative which is available now, significantly supports vulnerable community members.
Since 2007, over 160,000 grants nationally have been issued, helping older individuals and people with disabilities stay in their homes and avoid premature residential care.
Investment in these grants has increased by over 27%, from €73 million in 2020 to a projected €93 million in 2024.
This announcement follows the Report on the Review of the Housing Adaptation Grants, which advocates for these changes. “Grant limits will increase by €10,000 in some cases,” confirmed Deputy Cleere. “With the population over 65 projected to exceed 1.3 million by 2040, these grants are vital for maintaining independence. The revised means testing will simplify the application process and commenced on December 1 2024 with all applications submitted on or after that date being considered under the revised scheme.
“New application forms under the revised criteria are now available. This announcement underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for older individuals and those with disabilities,” he added.
