Army called in to help grit footpaths in Kilkenny City

Caution: There are patches of black ice on footpaths this morning

Members of the Defence Forces based at St Stephen's Barracks in Kilkenny City will be drafted in to help grit the city's footpaths today as the freezing weather looks set to worsen over the coming days.

An orange weather warning for Kilkenny for widespread severe frost, ice and lying snow is in place from 6pm tomorrow (Wednesday) until 11am on Thursday.

A spokesperson for Kilkenny County Council said that council staff had worked over recent days to clear footpaths in the city centre where the heaviest footfall occurs and that they are being assisted by members of the Defence Forces.

"Under the Winter Maintenance Plan, the council’s priority is to maintain strategic road transport links in and around the city and county.  Salting crews have and will continue to work to keep these links open to traffic over the course of the week.

In addition to this work, council staff have worked over the weekend to clear footpaths in the city centre where the heaviest footfall occurs.  These paths are generally clear with ongoing maintenance.  The council is aware of the issues with footpaths further out from the city centre and will be carrying out work on sections today (Tuesday), assisted by members of the Defence Forces based in James Stephens Barracks," added the spokesperson.
