Kilkenny community celebrate decorated career of local man

There was a full house last night in Bishop Freeman Schoolhouse, Coolagh as one of their own was honoured and feted after completing a massive 47 years at the helm of the Coolagh Pattern Committee.

Chairman, elected way back in 1978, when the Pattern was revived by James Neill, Coolaghmore. Billy was the chief organiser of the winter card games for the same period. Joan O’Keeffe was elected to replace Billy as the new Chairperson and John Corrigan takes over the task of managing the card games.

He is already organising a bumper Progressive 25 Drive for Coolagh Hall on Good Friday. Joan O’Keeffe welcomed Billy's Family, Friends and Neighbours to mark the end of an era and said Billy's heart was with the Coolagh Pattern for well over 47 years, and was the driving force behind all the traditions, particularly the Pattern itself. She said Billy was a man of respect and honour and together with his Wife, Eileen gave huge commitment to the Club.

Father Willie Dalton, on behalf of the people of the Parish, thanked Billy and Eileen for their leadership, he said they were part of the Coolagh Community 22 years before he arrived in Callan, that in itself is a lifetime in volunteering in the area, and they continue for another 25 years to today! He prayed and hoped the success of the Committee continues and Billy will be there to advise and guide the new members to the Committee.

Cllr Joe Lyons recalled the humble beginnings of the Pattern days, where meetings were held first in Margaret Fennellys pub, then Billy Mahers on the Cross. A public meeting was held to purchase the old National School on Coolaghflags and over 40 people voted for the purchase and one man Jack Sallenger voted against.

He said when there is a structure in place and a commitment to run the building well into the future, he would be in favour. Messages of good wishes were read from Bishop Niall Coll, Bishop of Ossory, who wished Billy and Eileen well and extended his blessings to their entire family.
