Waterford legend John Mullane has claimed the current crop of Limerick players have surpassed the great Kilkenny teams of the early 2000s.

The Treaty County won their 13th All-Ireland title on Sunday, with a comfortable win over Galway on hurling’s showpiece day.

John Kiely’s men have won six MacCarthy titles in eight years.

By contrast, Kilkenny, under the stewardship of Brian Cody, secured 11 All-Ireland crowns in 15 years, including an historic four in a row (2006-09).

“I never thought I would say this, that Kilkenny’s great team of the noughties have been eclipsed, but for me, Limerick are probably the greatest team we’ve ever seen,” Mullane wrote in his Irish Independent column.

“They won the four-in-a-row before missing out on All-Ireland glory for two years, and they needed to bounce back, a la the Kilkenny hurlers in 2011 and the Dublin footballers in 2023,” Mullane continued, issuing a warning to counties chasing Liam MacCarthy in the years to come.

“ They seem to have the best management team in the country, their players are still at the top of the tree — these green giants are not finished yet by any stretch.”
