Tullogher Rosbercon 4-19 St Martin’s 2-15

Tullogher Rosbercon made a winning start to the Michael Lyng Motors Hyundai intermediate hurling league with a convincing success over St Martin’s at St John’s Park on Sunday afternoon.

It was a power packed display by the Tullogher man as they took over in the second period to to run out much merited winners in the windup.

Danny Glennon grabbed a pair of goals and with Marty Murphy and James Cummins also finding the net in addition to a huge showing from midfielder Jamie Lyng and the South Kilkenny side were always in a degree of control.

The St Martin’s goals came via Shane Kinsella and Dan Comerford but they will be disappointed at how they fade away in the second half with the blustery wind conditions playing a part in that too.

It was a tight beginning to the game with the sides level at 0-3 apiece after an end to end opening five minutes of action.

Jamie Lyng, Marty Murphy and Danny Glennon all scored for Tullogher in that early spell with the Martin’s repost being from their two midfielders Shane Kinsella and captain Donal Shore.

Back to back Kinsella frees then gave St Martin’s a two point lead as they began to grow into the contest.

Danny Glennon was proving just as effective down the other end of the field for the Tullogher men and when he knocked over three more points, the minimum seperated the two sides at the halfway mark of the first half.

St Martin’s then plundered the first goal of the game when a dropping point attempt from Jamie Morrissey was caught by Dan Comerford and he placed the sliotar past Davy Walsh in the Tullogher goal.

Martin’s could never really build on the goal though and points from Walter Walsh and Andrew Murphy kept Tullogher in touch before the winners got a goal of their own with James Cummins blasting home after Walter Walsh set up the goal on the back of a storming run upfield.

Further points from Danny Glennon and Jamie Lyng allowed Tullogher to take a point advantage into the break after Martin’s hit back with scores from Oisin Kelly, Sean Hunt and Michael Keane. Tullogher then added a second goal within seconds of the resumption as Danny Glennon continued a fine individual showing and immediately after the goal he also added a point as Leigh O’Brien’s side opened a five point gap between the teams, 2-12 to 1-10.

Oisin Kelly and Sean Hunt brought Martin’s back to within touching distance but when Glennon flicked in his side’s third goal and a second for himself in the 41st minute, the result looked rather academic. Marty Murphy added on a fourth goal with time almost up and even though Shane Kinsella got one in kind from a dropping free for Martin’s, the job was already done as Tullogher ran out much deserved winners
