In a game which saw both teams have potential game defining chances, it was an early goal from Ethan Phelan in the 12th minute that proved to be enough to get the Kilkenny side over the line on an historic day for the club.

However, many years of hard work on and off the field has allowed the club to reach great heights at local and provincial level.

"One of the most important teams was the '93 team, people won't remember that team," Walsh said.

"Nobody will really remember that '93 team but Evergreen were at the bottom of the First Division and that team took us nearly through the whole year unbeaten," he added.

"That was a hugely important team, not the best team but hugely important."
