Film makers gather for networking event in Kilkenny

Approximately fifty people attended the inaugural event which was held at the Ormonde Hotel

Kilkenny-based scriptwriter Gerard Blanch recently organised a networking event for people interested in film.

The film maker saw that there was a need for more collaboration among people involved in the film industry locally and he successfully applied for funding to make this happen.

“Attending Kilkenny film events in live action, animated, experimental, alternative, short and feature films, I saw a range of screen industry talent living in Kilkenny but also, working independently. And I wondered how they might connect and work, collaboratively.”

Gerard was awarded an Artist Connect bursary to establish ‘Film In Kilkenny’ from Kilkenny Arts Office in March.

Earlier this month approximately fifty film makers attended its inaugural information and networking event, supported by Kilkenny Ormonde Hotel, IMC Cinema Kilkenny, Kilkenny People and Kilkenny Live.

There was a great atmosphere at the event as filmmakers introduced themselves as scriptwriters, producers, directors, editors, sound, camera, cinematography, scoring, VFX, props, special FX, crew, make up, actors and extras.

“Having this range of industry roles in one room, sharing their experience, ideas and aims, demonstrates that Kilkenny and the South-East region, has the skills and ambition to make diverse, original films and to attract international productions” explains Gerard.

“The model of foreign direct investment, and cultural tourism, as a return on investment, has proven successful for Screen Wexford, the film office for Wexford County Council, and similarly for the Waterford Film Centre (WFC)”.

Flavia Pordominsky (Director, Waterford Film Centre) spoke at the event on how to foster a local, South-East region screen industry and on creating initiatives for the local film making community.

“I invited Flavia Pordominsky as the guest speaker, to explain how the Waterford Film Centre formed, grew as a regional film maker resource and led Flavia to become director of the WFC, which is now Screen Waterford.”

Gerard also introduced Rita Mc Garvey (Economic Development Unit, Kilkenny County Council, based in the Local Enterprise Office) who announced the launch of Screen Kilkenny.

Looking to 2026, Gerard and Film In Kilkenny, are hoping to expand as a website and database for film makers, keen to locate to, work in and film in Kilkenny. Hopefully there will be plenty of lights, cameras and action!
