A unique collection of photographs taken on Inis Meáin in 1942 will be on display in the Hole in the Wall in the heart of Kilkenny City later this month.
The exhibition will be opened by Dr Colm Costello at 6pm on March 13 (Friday).
The black and white pictures were taken by Dr Costello’s father, Eamonn during a visit to the island during the Emergency (1939 - 1945) and provide some unique insights into the island and the lifestyle of its inhabitants.

One of the enduring images is that of the shawls worn by the women at the time. Standing against the backdrop of the ‘net’ design of the dry stone walls the woven shawl patterns blend the wearers into the iconic patterned vista. The waist coats and other clothing of the fishermen paint an earthy feature too.
The evening will be marked by the playing of traditional airs by members of the Costello family.
Castlecomer’s singer-songwriter Jamie Dowling will perform his version of ‘The Galway Shawl’ - a traditional tune song first recorded in 1936 by Bridget Kealey and Colm's son, Eamonn will also play the pipes at the opening.
Light refreshments will be provided. For further information contact Michael Conway at Hole in the Wall, 17 High St, Kilkenny or text 087 8075650.
