Local Sinn Fein councillor, Stephanie Doheny has raised concerns over lighting on the Callan Bypass in the wake of a tragic accident last week.

Jelena Kuzic, lost her life while crossing a stretch of the road last week leaving her family and the wider Callan community devastated.

Speaking at April’s sitting of the Callan-Thomastown Municipal District, Cllr Doheny queried whether it was possible to improve lighting and road markings in the area to prevent similar future tragedies.

In response, Senior Engineer with Kilkenny County Council, Declan Murphy acknowledged the need for additional safety measures on the route but noted such works are funding dependent and the road falls under the remit of Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).

Meanwhile, the family of Ms Kuzic have thanked the public for their kindness, adding, "your kindness means more than words can express."

At last week’s meeting, councillors united in expressing their condolences with the family.

Cllr Deirdre Cullen commented, it was ‘tragic’ for all the community, while Cllr Joe Lyons extended his sympathies, noting, it was the second tragic accident to occur on the local bypass.
