A defendant who was driving an e-scooter which can travel at speeds of up to 51 kilometres per hour was fined €300 at Kilkenny District Court.
Abdelhadi Lakhtiri, Kilkenny Inn Hotel, Vicar Street, Kilkenny admitted the offence which took place at Purcellsinch, Kilkenny on September 23, 2025.
The court heard that on the date in question Garda Andy Neill followed and stopped the defendant on the e-scooter as he suspected that the scooter was a MPV. Gda Neill stopped the vehicle and spoke to the driver and made a demand for insurance.
Gda Neill told the court that the defendant was very co-operative at the scene. The garda subsequently tested the e-scooter and detected that it went at a speed of up to 51 kilometres per hour, which is 31 kilometres per hour more than what is allowed.
The court heard that the defendant is a Moroccan national who had made ‘a foolish decision’ on the date in question to use the e-scooter. Judge Geraldine Carthy imposed a €300 fine.
