A defendant who pleaded guilty to three counts of assault and to a number of public order charges was sentenced to ten months in prison at Kilkenny District Court.

Darren Crosby, of no fixed abode, appeared via videolink before Judge Geraldine Carthy.

Last month Crosby had pleaded guilty to three counts of assault contrary to section 2 of The Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act in Ballyragget on December 6, 2025 and to being intoxicated in a public place and to engaging in threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour on the same date.

A number of victim impact statements were handed into the court, including a statement from the defendant’s mother, who was one of the injured parties.

Judge Geraldine Carthy described her statement as being both moving and stark.

“Darren is the best in the world when he is sober,” she said adding that when he has drink in it he ‘gets nasty’.

The court heard that the defendant has ‘an entrenched addiction’ to alcohol which has impacted on his mental and physical health.

Judge Carthy imposed two five month prison sentences, to run consecutively to each other.
