Burnchurch took part in the Seachtain na Gaeilge event

A special event was held at the Set Theatre on Monday last, a musical celebration of the living Irish tradition with and for the youth of Kilkenny.

The numbers attending spoke volumes. coming as they did, not just from all-Irish schools, but from a cross section of the schools in Kilkenny. As the saying goes, ‘moll an óige agus tiocfaidh sí’ - and it’s clear that the growth of interest and grá for the Irish language is being pushed forward by this coming generation, both nationally and locally.

As part of the momentum driving the language and this year’s events, local band Burnchurch brought their high-energy sound, with two shows for the students from schools across the city.  The band intend to make this an annual event for schools around the county, and judging by the enthusiastic reception to the concert, it can only grow.

Seachtain na Gaeilge is the perfect occasion for bringing music and language directly to students to ensure that Gaeilge is not just a school subject, but a living entity.

The band attributes much of the renewed interest in the Irish language to Belfast’s Kneecap, who have played a huge part in reviving the language, bringing it to international stages and making it a part of the mainstream.

This is a busy time for Burnchurch with gigs almost every day over the next two weeks. They are due to play at UCD’s Astra Hall this week and at Maynooth university the following week. Gigs in Cork and Killarney main street are planned over the next few weeks.

The band’s latest single ‘Samba na hÉireann’ has been a great success, with multiple airplays on national and local radio. It also made RTE’s recommended music list the week of its release and they filled the legendary Abbey Tavern as part of the Dublin TradFest festival.

Burnchurch will also be playing live in the Left Bank on Sunday, March 15 at 6pm as part of St Patrick’s Day festival celebrations. This show is open to the public, free of charge.
