Elected councillors in the Kilkenny City Municipal District are set to meet in the unusual but beautiful setting of the Black Abbey to celebrate it's 800th anniversary.
The Abbey was established as a Dominican Friary in 1225 and was considered a tranquil spot, as it fell outside the walls of Kilkenny City.

After many turbulent years, the abbey was restored and opened as a public place of worship in the 1800s.
The Black Abbey played a major role in the civil and ecclesiastical life of the city until 1543, when King Henry VIII confiscated it and converted it into a courthouse. Though the years of occupation left the abbey in ruin, it was eventually restored and opened for public worship in the 19th century.
*UPDATE 7.50pm Friday, May 2 - May's sitting will revert back to County Hall with no date yet known for a meeting at the Black Abbey.
