Cathoirleach of Kilkenny County Council, Cllr Joe Malone has paid tribute to local butcher, John Joe Cullen, describing him as “a decent man.”

The well known figure announced his retirement after five decades in the profession on Monday.

The John Street butcher confirmed the doors will close for the final time on Saturday, September 19.

The iconic butcher first went behind the counter on the street in 1976 under former owner Billy Sullivan.

The proud Village man and history buff, subsequently took over the business in his own name in the mid 1990s.

“It’s the end of an era. It was a great talking shop and I used to go in and buy meat for the tea but it was a personal thing in the store. You were always made welcome by Billy Sullivan and John Joe continued that on,” he said.

“It’s disappointing but I wish John Joe and the family well.”

“After 50 wonderful years, retirement beckons,” the popular Kilkenny businessman said.

“Thank you to all our loyal customers for 50 years of support, friendship and loyalty. It has been an honour to serve you,” he added.

“From the bottom of my heart, thank you.”
