Members of the Defence Forces marched through Kilkenny as part of ‘Rory’s Miles To Mayo’

Members of the 3rd Infantry Battalion, based at James Stephens Barracks in Kilkenny, came out in force in recent days to support a worthwhile charitable initiative.

Members of the Defence Forces marched through Kilkenny’s roads and streets alongside ex-Irish rugby international Rory Best, as part of his charity challenge, called ‘Rory’s Miles To Mayo’, in support of Cancer Fund for Children.

Best’s challenge is to walk nine marathons in nine days, covering over 235 miles, walking approximately 50,000 steps daily.

This is the third and final chapter of Rory’s Miles To Mayo. In 2021, Best completed his first Rory’s Miles to Mayo challenge, walking 180 miles from Daisy Lodge in Newcastle, County Down to the future site in Cong, County Mayo, raising over €1 million.

The second Rory’s Miles To Mayo challenge in 2023, saw the Ulster man walking 220 miles from Dublin’s Aviva Stadium to Cong, raising €1.5million, breaking ground on the new Daisy Lodge on arrival.

“Rory’s commitment, resilience and leadership are qualities we recognise and value within the Defence Forces,” a spokesperson for the 3rd Infantry Battalion commented.

“It was a privilege to join him, show our support, and play a small part in raising awareness and funds for such an important cause. Well done Rory — and thank you for letting us be part of it.”
