Speed limits to fall on many Kilkenny roads - councillors agree

 50km per hour speed limit

A review of speed limits is carried out every four to five years, by the local authority for local roads and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) for national roads.

The review is guided by legislation. There was also a period of public consultation, in May and June. Sixty- four submissions were received by Kilkenny County Council.

Executive engineer Joe Scully said there was a lot of repetition in those submissions, with a number of people concerned about the same roads.

Some changes are as a result of submissions. However, while many submissions had valid reasons for lowering a speed limit they could not be changed within the current guidelines and bylaws.

In the Callan Thomastown area changes include:

  • The Thomastown road out of Bennettsbridge - the 50kph zone will be extended out past the Kilree Park estate.
  • In Graignamanagh the 50kph zone will be extended out past Silare Wood and on the Borris Road.
  • The 50kph zone on Mill Road in Inistioge will be extended to include the road alongside housing.
  • Stoneyford will see lower speed limits extending out the Kilkenny Road, Kells Road and the Thomastown Road, past the school.
  • In the Rosbercon area changes have taken into account a number of housing estates and the 50kph zone is extended out the Shanbough/ Millbanks Road, to include a dangerous junction.
  • The 60kph zone in Burnchurch is to be extended out past the school.
  • In Listerlin both the 50kph and 60kph zones are extended.
  • A new 60kph limit will be put in place at the Coolagh cross junction, outside Callan.
  • The 50kph zone is extended to include more of the village in Skeoughvosteen.

All the roads highlighted for speed limit changes have been detailed on a map, with exact zone boundaries.
