Kilkenny families at ‘breaking point’ as students left with no school bus places

A significant number of parents and guardians in Gowran have called for the urgent introduction of an additional Bus Éireann school bus service to Kilkenny City, as the practical and financial pressure ramps up for some families.

Only one-third of students in the area currently have access to the existing school transport service, leaving many without a seat and some students travelling by car as early as 6.15am and not home until 5pm, negatively impacting their performance in school and extracurricular activities.

The Gowran School Transport Group recently held a well-attended public meeting and has sent numerous correspondence to the bus company, but no permanent solution has been reached to date.

Families are collectively spending €67,500 per year on fuel, approximately €1,350 per family, leaving many families at 'breaking point'.

"What we need now is a State body that is willing to act," Chairperson of the group, Brendan Hayes said.
