Kilkenny County Council Cathaoirleach, Cllr Fidelis Doherty commend the ongoing efforts of local community groups
Chairman of Piltown Municipal District Cllr Pat Dunphy today proposed that South Kilkenny councillors write a letter to the Russian Embassy condemning Russia's actions in Ukraine.
The proposal was tabled at this morning's meeting of Piltown Municipal District Council in Ferrybank, County Kilkenny.
Cllr Dunphy highlighted the fact that the conflict is at the forefront of many local constituents' minds and expressed the importance of escalating their concerns politically.
Cllr Eamon Aylward seconded the proposal, calling the war 'needless' and stating that 'it is innocent people that suffer the most'.
Cllr Tomás Breathnach expressed his condemnation of the conflict by stating that 'lives are being lost for an ego'.
There was widespread consensus amongst councillors present that the letter would serve to show solidarity on a local level, regardless of its impact.
Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council, Cllr Fidelis Doherty, then took some time to commend the ongoing efforts of local community groups who are gathering supplies to be transported to Ukraine.
Cllr Dunphy acknowledged that local people are 'coming to the forefront' on the matter.
