One of the new lanterns installed in Kilkenny City centre
New lighting in the form of traditional wall-mounted lanterns are actively being installed in the heart of Kilkenny City.
Despite their old-school appearance, these lanterns make use of the latest LED lighting technology.
Many have already been wired and installed along the Medieval Mile, with forty-four planned in total.
It is hoped that the new lighting fixtures will replace the existing lighting fixtures in the locations that they are installed.
Cllr Andrew McGuinness described the new lighting fixtures as 'absolutely fantastic' at today's meeting of Kilkenny Municipal District Council.
"This lighting is sensitive to Kilkenny and it would be great to see them rolled out throughout the city centre," he said.
Cllr John Coonan stated that the new lighting fixtures are 'much more pleasing to the eye' than the existing fixtures, stating that they 'add to the attractiveness of High Street'.
Cllr Andrew McGuinness also raised the topic of lighting at The Parade.
"The temporary lighting that was on The Parade at Christmas really served to improve the whole look and feel of the area," he said.
"There must be an argument to put permanent lighting to that effect there."
