Dublin man receives fine after drunken ‘altercation’ with partner outside Kilkenny hotel

The incident occurred outside the Kilkenny Ormonde Hotel

A Dublin man has received a fine after he was involved in an altercation with his partner outside a hotel in Kilkenny city.

Paul Cahill (50) of Shanowen Crescent, Santry, Dublin, appeared before Kilkenny District Court, charged with two public order offences.

He pleaded guilty to intoxication in a public place under Section 4 of the Public Order Act. In light of this plea, An Garda Síochána subsequently withdrew a separate charge under Section 6 of the same act.

Sergeant Morgan O’Connor told the court that on November 10, 2025 at approximately 12:15am, an altercation took place between Mr Cahill and his partner outside the Kilkenny Ormonde Hotel on Ormonde Street.

When gardaí arrived at the scene, Mr Cahill was found to be “highly intoxicated”. He failed to co-operate with gardaí and became aggressive.

Solicitor Alex Rafter, representing the accused, said that Mr Cahill and his partner had travelled to Kilkenny from Dublin on the weekend in question.

He said that his client was remorseful and had issued an apology to the gardaí.

Mr Rafter told the court that the couple had been in a relationship for 14 years at the time of the incident, but are no longer together.

Mr Cahill found alternative accommodation in the aftermath of the incident and has subsequently admitted that he was a “nuisance” on the night in question.

Mr Rafter added that his client previously worked as a carpenter but is currently unemployed.

After formally convicting Mr Cahill, Judge Geraldine Carthy fined him €50.
