New Kilkenny road layout ‘an absolute joke’ says councillor and election candidate

A new road layout at the Bennettsbridge roundabout in Kilkenny City is the ‘greatest disgrace’ and ‘greatest waste of money’ according to one local councillor and general election candidate.

“What genius came up with that concept, two lanes into one?” asked Cllr Peter ‘Chap’ Cleere at the November meeting of Callan Thomastown Municipal District councillors.

The Callan Thomastown chairman criticised the changes to traffic flow on the Kilkenny City Ring Road following works on Ossory Bridge, earlier this year.

Describing the finished work as ‘a travesty’ Cllr Cleere said the scheme which sees two lanes merge into one is ‘an absolute joke’.

He raised traffic safety concerns for drivers trying to get from the Watershed to Ossory Bridge taking a route around the roundabout to avoid long queues.
