A proposed masterplan which would transform the 60-acre St Canice’s/HSE site and provide ‘significant housing’ has taken another step forward, with new plans scheduled to go on public display in January.

In a wide-ranging presentation given to councillors at Friday’s sitting of the Kilkenny City Municipal District, elected members widely welcomed the proposed project, which potentially could see the construction of 335 new homes.

In terms of the housing construction in the area, two options were outlined by Director of Services with Kilkenny County Council Tim Butler during the presentation.

One encompasses leaving in place the HSE building (located nearest to the city) — or removing it.

"You would have the potential for 190 houses if it’s left there or you would have the potential for 335 homes if you take it away," Mr Butler explained.

It is anticipated the site would include a ‘compact, walkable neighbourhood with strong connections to the city centre’. Public transport options as well as walking and cycling facilities are also in the pipeline.

Furthermore, under the plans, HSE facilities will be available and consolidated to one area of the site.

Meanwhile, parkland/open spaces will feature prominently with 2/3 of the land designated to active/passive space.

The erection of community and commercial units are also being considered with works set to be completed on a phased basis.

Previously, the project was delayed due to a ‘myriad’ of reasons including the Covid-19 pandemic.

The process is now back on course with feedback from the previous public consultation as well as ongoing dialogue with the HSE, who are the custodians of the site, assisting in the assembling of plans.

A report is set to be presented to members in March or April of next year.
