LATEST: Works set to begin on large-scale Kilkenny school project

Kilkenny County Council has outlined plans to deliver a ‘Safe Routes to School’ scheme in Paulstown NS as part of the ‘Transport Authority’s Active Travel Programme’.

A number of schools in Kilkenny have also received investment under the scheme including: Loreto Secondary School, St Canice’s and St John of God primary schools in the city, as well as Graignamanagh’s Duiske College, the boy’s national school and Scoil Mhuire Gan Smal.

The proposed scheme includes front of school treatment, improved footpaths, new and improved crossing points as well as the installation of a new bus bay and school zone treatments on the approach to the school.

Proposed steps to manage traffic flow more safely will feature junction tightening and raised crossings to slow vehicles in the vicinity.

The project, which was presented to councillors at this month’s meeting of the Castlecomer Municipal District, aims to create a safer environment for all road users and in particular the school students.

This scheme focuses on the front of the school and extends to crossing points on the R712 and R448 to facilitate improved linkages to community facilities.

This route will connect the school with the existing community facilities and encourage walking, wheeling and cycling to school.

Drawings can be viewed at the Active Travel Offices, Kilkenny County Council in St Patrick’s Court from 9.30 to 4.30pm and the Area Office of Municipal District of Castlecomer. Observations can be emailed to activetravel@kilkennycoco.ie by Friday, March 20.
