'Expect the unexpected' - Kilkenny braces itself as new weather warning is issued

Pedestrians and other road users are being urged to 'expect the unexpected’ with uncleared flood water and a new weather warning on the horizon for County Kilkenny.

Met Éireann has issued two Status Yellow rain warnings for Kilkenny and seven other counties as further heavy rain moves in on already saturated ground.

The national forecaster has warned that localised flooding, river flooding and difficult travel conditions are possible from Monday afternoon through to Tuesday, with warnings starting and ending at different times depending on location.

The first Status Yellow rain warning covers Kilkenny, Carlow, Wexford, Cork and Waterford. It will come into effect at 1pm on Bank Holiday Monday and remain in place until 9am on Tuesday morning. - READ MORE HERE

"While today is sunny and dry it will take some days for water levels to drop," Director of Services with Kilkenny County Council, Mary Mulholland said.

"It’s very important that during rainfall people avoid travel and if the must travel allow extra time as localised flooding can appear anywhere at present because of land saturation.

"Kilkenny County Council will not have signage at every location as instances of flooding can be unpredictable and may last only a short time," she added.

Ms Mulholland also urged people to avoid driving into floods or to go to look at flooding.

"The Fire and Emergency Services have had to rescue people from cars where they drove past flood warning signs to look at the river. This is very unhelpful and takes emergency services away from other tasks."
