An expansion in housing delivery in the Castlecomer Municipal District (MD) has been warmly welcomed by local councillors following the release of positive data for the area.

Kilkenny County Council’s Housing Department has confirmed 37 social houses were delivered across four different housing schemes in the area last year with the Ardreagh Lumper Lane development in Urlingford the largest.

Meanwhile, 169 applicants for social housing were approved in the Castlecomer MD region this month with Castlecomer and Ballyragget the biggest providers (44 and 42 respectively). Of the social housing granted, 79% of the total need is for one or two bed units.

Elsewhere, the upward trajectory in the North Kilkenny political zone appears to resemble an overall improvement in local housing delivery.

According to new commencement data from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, County Kilkenny as a whole saw 1,400 new homes started over the last two years - a 36% increase over the preceding two-year period.

Fourteen hundred housing units were commenced in Kilkenny across 2024 and 2025 combined.
